The current tax system in the Czech Republic was introduced on 1 January 1993, with the exception of VAT legislation and energy taxation. A completely new VAT Act, harmonised with EU directives, took effect as at 1 May 2004. The principal taxes in the Czech Republic are corporate income tax, personal income tax and value-added tax. Energy taxation was introduced in 2008.
